Baby toys from 0 to 2 years: choosing well

A newborn or first-birthday gift is often the hardest to choose: the baby will not say what they prefer, and parents already receive plenty of clothes. A well-chosen baby toy, suited to what the baby can do, gets used every day.
Start by reading the box
For the very young, the minimum age printed by the manufacturer and its warnings are the first thing to look at. They take into account the size of the parts and the intended use. Every product page in our shop shows the box age; if in doubt, choose the toy meant for the baby’s age now, not the age they will be in six months.
The first months: looking and grasping
A baby first learns to follow with the eyes, then to grasp. An open-weave ball that small fingers can catch from any side is a classic for this stage: easy to hold, to shake, and it rolls without going far.
Towards the first year: shaking, pressing, discovering
Once the baby sits up, they love toys that react: they make a sound, move, or change when handled. Bright Starts infant toys are designed for this period. The exact model varies with each delivery; the product page says what is available.
A word on cleaning
A baby toy goes in the mouth: read the cleaning instructions printed by the manufacturer and follow them. Keep older siblings’ toys, often made of small pieces, out of the youngest one’s reach.
